Apocalypse 2012 Essay

2379 words - 10 pages

65 million years ago a ten kilometer wide asteroid slammed into Mexico, leaving a 175 kilometer wide crater on the earth’s surface. This collision caused the extinction of 70% of all species that inhabited the earth, including the dinosaurs. The earth has existed for approximately 4.5 billion years. Scientists are led to believe that the earth has encountered five mass extinctions, just as the dinosaurs experienced. Modern day scientists and ancient societies believe that the sixth extinction is soon to happen. Several sources such as the Mayan Calendar, I Ching, web projects, and the Sibyl point to the end of the world to occur on one specific date; the winter solstice of 2012. Also, Scientists believe the earth could end in multiple different scenarios: being sucked into a black hole; nuclear winter; volcanic explosion; or ice age. Both scientists and ancient societies agree that the world will come to an end in the near future. Through research, evidence suggests that the world, could in fact, end on December 21, 2012.
Through years of investigation, scientists are convinced that the Mayan Calendar predicts the world to end in 2012. The Mayan people relied much on calendars; they saw them as visual depictions of the passage of time. Mayans were believed to have twenty calendars that depicted the movement of the Sun, Moon, and visible planets. The time duration of the calendars would range from 260 days to 5,200 year sand beyond (Lawrence, 29). The Mayan prophecies for 2012 are the province of the Long Count calendar, which covers approximately 5,200 solar years; a period the Maya called a Sun. According to the Mayan people, the world has gone through three Suns, and will finish the fourth on December 21, 2012. The Long Count calendar works with five place holders. The first place holder is reserved for the units of one day; the second for units of twenty days; third for units of 360 days, or a Mayan solar year; fourth for units of 7200, or twenty solar years; fifth for units of 400 Mayan solar years, or 144,000 days (Callahan, Par.7). The Mayans express the end of the world to occur on The number thirteen refers to the number of baktuns, periods of 400 Mayan solar years. One Sun can be worked out to be thirteen times 144,000 days, or 1,872,000 days long. After a Sun has ended, the calendar starts back over again at (Lawrence, 25). The Mayan Calendar has been proven to be reliable for centuries. The ancient society predicted events that actually happened thousands of years in the future. In the eighth century A.D., the Mayans predicted that “White skinned bearded Gods” would arrive from across the sea on March 5th, 1519. On that exact date, Cortez and his Conquistadors arrived in the new world (Mast, Par. 6). Also, the Mayans were experts on cycles of universal processes. The cycles include harvest, Solar and Lunar eclipses, and pregnancy. The Mayans scheduled a solar eclipse to occur on August...
