With a new design and faster processor, the iPad Air was in instant success. However, the new Kindle Fire HDX 8.9 is not far behind. Amazon’s new Kindle offers a higher resolution screen and new features such as the Mayday button for immediate support all for $120 less than Apple’s iPad. But which tablet is a better overall value for what it can provide?
Amazon’s Kindle Fire HDX 8.9 weighs in at .89 pounds with an 8.9 inch display. This is much lighter and smaller than the iPad Air. 72 for iBooks and $7.49 on the Kindle according to The New York Times.
The iPad Air offers iWork suite for free and can be extremely handy for anyone who needs to work from his or her tablet. Apple also offers many helpful productivity tools through its App Store. From Dropbox and Google Drive to Salesforce, someone can easily find an app they need to get work done. Amazon, on the other hand, does not offer a productivity suite of its own. However, when it comes to parental controls Amazon has the upper hand. The new HDX offers a way to control what children can view. With Kindle FreeTime, parents can easily create profiles for different children and hand-select which books, apps, games, and videos their kids can access. Parents can also set daily limits for tablet use or restrict specific categories of content, such as games and movies. Apples iPad contain parental controls but they are difficult to discover. Through the controls it is possible to turn off access to stores, browser, and in-app purchases and even restrict content based on ratings. Unfortunately, on the Air tablet there is no way to restrict time usage.
According to Amazon, the Kindle Fire HDX can last up to 12 hours on a single charge. Also, if being used just for reading, the tablet is smart enough to power down unused apps and components to extend life to about 18 hours. The iPad Air can be used for up to 10 hours on a single charge. The HDX offers many unique special features, including Mayday. With very few taps an owner can see and hear a tech support agent 24/7 with the service. The agent can even walk someone through features by drawing on their screen. Amazon also included its x-ray feature...
