1. At CoBA, we place great importance in values, initiative and professionalism. Describe one example of how you have demonstrated these qualities.

It is by setting constant goals for myself that I am able to demonstrate values and initiative throughout my life in a consistent way. Immediate goals limit distractions along the path I choose to take. Short-term goals keep my eyes down the road to ensure that I can overcome the obstacles ahead. Long-term goals allow me to understand that the obstacles that I see ahead are far inferior to unforeseen challenges that wait for me down the road. The establishment of a completely new team that had never worked together before compounded the difficulty. Much like establishing a new company culture, supplanting your knowledge to the minds of others takes a multi-dimensional perspective and persistence. You must start with a common vision. With that vision you must establish common team goals. The vision is not established on winning or losing a game. The vision is based on the foundation of a cohesive unit working together in order to repeatedly succeed in the face of any challenge that they may face. Over the course of the season we were able to win more than we lost and made it to the second round of the playoffs. The lesson was not in the winning or losing but in how we were able to accomplish a common goal established through a single vision through hard work and dedication. This was one of my greatest team building accomplishments, having never coached a football team before.

4. Describe an experience where you felt most effective as a leader.

As Avionics Division Officer in my previous command I had the opportunity to lead about 20 enlisted personnel and 1 other officer. A sailor, AE2 Diejuste, approaches me a few months after checking into my division and tells me how appreciative he was of my leadership and that he was hoping to be a Naval Officer to become the same type of leader I was. It was only a brief moment, but it meant the world to me. Looking back, this division, small in number, compared to the other 90 enlisted sailors of the squadron, was responsible for 6 out of the 10 highest awards given to all squadrons enlisted personnel.
