Definition of democracy
Before discussing the relationship between Confucianism and democracy, it is important to clarify what definition of democracy will be adopted as it sets the agenda and the framework of the analysis. As argued by many scholars, democracy is an essentially contested that there is no unitary definition can fit universally without regard to context (Whitehead, 1997). Basically, it can be classified into a procedural and substantive concept.

Confucianism prioritises common good over self-interests and people have to abide their duties in contribution to the majority benefits.

Referring to Confucius (n.d), the ideal political scenario would be when ‘there is government, when the prince is prince, and the minister is minister; when the father is father, and the son is son’. It is noticed that people are placed in a static social position since all they are asked to do is to perform their duties in accordance to their places for the sake of stability and social harmony. Subservience to authority is requested under in a hierarchical social order. Particularly in Asian societies where Confucianism acting as a code of behaviour is often seen the justification of sacrifice on individual/ cluster interests for social harmony. Take South Korea as an example, people are found to be reluctant stand up for their own rights if that would upset interpersonal harmony (Park& Shin, 2006). Unsurprisingly, Confucianism is heavily criticised by scholars who embrace liberal democracy by its ignorance of individual interests and rights. Since the respect of individual liberties is the upmost fundamental element of liberal democracy, Confucianism cannot even meet the minimal standard of democracy in supporting the notion of human rights (Huntington, 1991). However, Confucianism is not only rejected by scholars for its compatibility with democracy, but also by Chinese scholars.
