The scientist Aristotle (384-322 BCE) developed many important theories which modern day physics is based upon. One of these theories is Aristotle’s theory of motion. Through his research Aristotle attempted to provide explanations as to how objects in our universe moved. While many of his theories have been since proven to be inaccurate, they provided a basis for future theories which eventually lead to our present day understanding of motion.

Violent motion does not occur on its own, someone or something has to move the object in a manner which is inconsistent with its natural movements to be classified as violent.
One exception to Aristotle’s natural resting place rule are the planets. He believed this to be true because planetary motion appears to be in a circular fashion. (Sachs) For this motion he used a unique element called aether. For this element Aristotle hypothesized that the natural motion of aether was circular so this is why the planets move in, what appears to be, a circular pattern. This hypothesis lead Aristotle to develop a geocentric view of the universe. A geocentric universe is one which the Earth is in the center and all other planets in our solar system orbit around the Earth. This conclusion is easy to arrive at considering planets such as the sun and moon appear to rotate across the sky and go out of site after a period of time and then reappear on the opposite side once again. Thomas Aquinas adopted this method of thinking and he incorporated it into Catholic teaching. This adoption made it particularly difficult for other great minds to propose theories that weren’t geocentrically based since it created a situation where they were essentially going against the Catholic Church.
