“Miai” is no longer as prevalent in Japan and it is estimated that only about 7% of marriages are arranged (Ito 15). Japanese arranged marriages consist of two people who do not know each other and possibly the involvement of their families. In “Romeo and Juliet”, Act III, scene iv, lines 140-146 Capulet and Lady Capulet are wondering why Juliet is not pleased that she will be marrying such a worthy and fine gentleman when she is unworthy of him. In lines 147-149, Juliet responds by saying, “Proud can I never be of what I hate” (Shakespeare 805). In this line where “proud” is defined as “pleased”, Juliet means that she hates the thought of marrying Paris and she cannot be happy about it. This scene from “Romeo and Juliet” and arranged marriage in Japan relate since in both cases, the children have little to nonexistent input into who they are to be married to. There is no love, or even friendship involved, and no matter how unhappy the two halves of the couple may be the marriage still occurs.
Additionally, in Pakistan arranged marriage is currently more popular than in Japan. In Pakistan there are two types of marriages: semi-arranged and completely arranged. In semi-arranged the couple makes the final decision and in completely arranged the parent’s decision is final. Arranged marriages in Pakistan often have deep gender divisions, especially concerning a woman’s obligation to her home and family first and a man’s role as the primary source of income. Women often give up their happiness and aspirations to devote their lives to...
