David DeVito and Nate Rempe in the article “Textbook insights: What is in store for the college bookstore” talk about their study on the students’ tendency to buy used textbooks online. They made several statements as a result of their research:
- the college textbooks remains very important for the students;
- today’s students still prefer shopping in bookstores, but they are not afraid to go online to purchase books;
- the college students prefer to buy used books; they do not satisfied with their experiences when selling textbooks back.
This article will help to understand whether the college students will interested in buying textbooks online through the college website. To find it out, I have to figure out whether this article reliable source for our research.

The authors made the statements in their article based on the results of the surveys. They show all results of the certain questions in the article. For example, David DeVito and Nate Rempe (2006) asked the college students “Do you prefer to buy textbooks in bookstores or online?” (p. 6), and they wrote that “in total 48% of college students prefer bookstores, 23% prefer online, and 30% are neutral” (p. 6).The difference between percentages could be not so noticeable, and David DeVito and Nate Rempe (2006) could wrote just the result – “traditional bookstores remains the preferred source for textbooks” (p. 6). But they provided all results. It shows that they presented several sides of the issue. The authors treat the opposing views fairly. They provided several choices of answers for the students, to find out more about the issue. The language and tone of the authors do not contain any signs of bias.
The central claim of this article is the issue of overpriced textbooks and the importance of the college and online bookstores in resolving this issue. The authors used traditional focus groups and an online bulletin board sessions to survey 823 college students. They also surveyed 400 college professors and 117 bookstore managers. It shows that the claim is supported fairly and logically. The survey system provided the opportunity to see different views on this issue, and also consider and refute the opposing views effectively. The only questionable in this article is author’s proposed solution. Since it is an advertisement of Nebraska Book Company Inc., the provided solution is subjective.
Our team’s goal is to find out the better solution for reducing the cost of textbooks. The one of proposed solution was creating the college website for selling and exchanging textbooks between students of Northeastern University. This article helped me to understand the importance of both traditional and online bookstores. After the article evaluation, I concluded that despite the advertisement goal of this article, this source is valid to use in light of our research.
