Veyne, Paul. "Pleasure and Excesses in the Roman Empire." The Roman Empire Cambridge, Mass.: Belknap Press of Harvard University Press, 1997. 101-116.
When people think of Roman culture, they see the violence, the lust, and betrayal of one another. This perception is due to the influence novels and movies and televisions shows depicting such actions. However, like most revolving around the past there is more to cultures of the Roman people. To prove that Rome’s culture is not how it seems, historian Paul Veyne published “Pleasure and Excess in Roman Empire” to explain to the audience more about the culture they are not fully aware of in the article. But how well does Veyne’s explanation in ...view middle of the document...

Seuil published La société romaine in 1991 and Le Pain et le Cirque: Sociologie historique d'un pluralisme politique (L'Univers historique) in 2013.
Veyne’s article does not seem to hold prejudice in his writings. The details on bias opinion on the matter however is due to fact that he wants the world to know the positives of Roman cultures and he does so by using facts and stories which are backed by his footnotes and the questions he asks himself or the reader. There are a many similarities between the text and the book. Both refer to Emperor Nero and him being overthrown by the public. Additionally, while not directly referring to any emperor, they both write about how their behavior would ultimately be their downfall (Veyne, 102-103). Both describe the lifestyles of the Roman people. The only contradiction there seems to be topic of Veyne’s whole article seems to be his discussion on the love section of the article (Veyne, 113-116). Veyne describes love between women and men as enslavement but between both men in different age group as agreeable during the time period. What contradicts each other is what he is writing feels confusing to understand at times and even though the topic of love is still involved in this category, the message does not transition itself in the right way. As for the errors in this article, there are no grammatical errors. As for sentence structure on pages 102,103,107,108 and 110, his sentences the ellipsis, while not error technically, it does make the article feel incomplete without any of the missing...
