Artifact In Computer Science Essay

1043 words - 5 pages

Computers are what run society today, everywhere we look we see devices that are run off of computers and microcomputers such as phones, computers, tablets, and even vehicles. It is now the way the world communicates with each other, because of computers it is a much smaller world in which we live. Computers have been around for such a short period of time, yet they seem to be advancing faster than anything else; this is because there is an infinite number of ways computers can be implemented to help individuals. Thirty years after the first computer was developed, computers had already been altered to read and save information on magnetic tapes that ran through the computer. What is the main purpose of computers? Today that purpose is for mainly research, communication, and recording information. Before the invention and implementation of the internet in the early 90’s, using a computer to research a topic, or communicate with people around you would be a pointless endeavor. This is the exact reason why no one felt that the personal computer would ever become popular, because only companies and scientists who needed to simulate events based on different variables, and needed to compute complex calculations for research purposes required computers. The picture earlier was taken at a lab at ECU with no background information provided for the picture, it can be assumed that this computer is being used to calculate large sums of information for research purposes.
How has technology increased so much over just 70 years? According to Moore’s law, “processing power for computers will double every two years.” (Moore's Law). This law has not only been beneficial because Moore presented past information showing that historically processing power has doubled every other year, but Moore’s law also set a goal for processor manufacturers to double processing power every other year. The reason that computers always need more processing power and more storage, is because there is constantly new programs for computers that are intended to increase the ease, speed and accessibility of the user. These programs are growing in complexity to make the user interface more simplistic, resulting in longer and longer programs making them harder for a processor to process and turn into data readable to the computer.
Once computers had shown potential for simplifying tasks for humans, it was then a race to develop new programs and machines that would increase human efficiency and speed at which humans can work. This has been the sole reason technology has grown since the early 40’s; to increase the amount of work an individual can achieve in a given time. There is no field of employment that cannot be improved and innovated with technology, this is why jobs are being replaced with machines. “In all three key employment sectors - agriculture, manufacturing,...
