Assessment is used in multiple ways in a classroom to help evaluate the student in their learning. Within the book and article, assessment has a wide variety of ranges and uses in determining a child’s level of understand a topic. In the book, McAfee and Leong, explains how assessment when used responsibility when evaluating a child. Whereas in the article, Stockall, Dennis, and Rueter explains the use of progress-monitoring portfolios in assessment for special need students and variety information on progress-monitoring portfolio.

Response to instruction (RTI) is a strategy for distinguishing between students struggling to learn and those who have a learning disability. Within this form of assessment, they use progress-monitoring, which they have to follow guidelines for the assessment (McAfee, 2002, p. 14). To contrast the book by the article, it goes into detail how this is essential in RTI, but not what the format is or what guidelines are for gathering the information for the portfolio as it was described in the article.
Another key point in the article is to always allow for parental input, this is a key part within the article, as parents are needed to have a voice in the child’s academic career and can help with the PMP. For example, the parent can help provide a video recording of their child doing the alphabet. Later, the teacher can watch and make an assessment on the students reading level. (Stockall et al., 2014, p. 6). Within the book, it helps compare the important of parental input by mentioning on how the parent need’s to be involved with students learning at home, but in contrast it states only for dual language learners for example, by having the parents use their first language at home to help read to their child (McAfee, 2002, p. 22).
The last key idea in the article is the progress-monitoring portfolio is an effective way to show growth of the student in mastering of skills. This is demonstrated by making sure that the teacher has the correct information gathered on the student and a constant support from the school and parents in monitoring the student growth through this form of assessment.
