Assignment #1 Television; “Futurama”

1197 words - 5 pages

My favorite television show is Futurama, it was created by Matt Groening who also created the show The Simpsons and it’s also produced by Groening, David X. Cohen and Ken Kessler. In the United States, Fox aired the series from March 28th, 1999 to August 10th, 2003 before ceasing production; Futurama was then aired as reruns on Adult Swim and Cartoon Network from January 2003 to December 2007. It was revived in 2007 as four straight-to-DVD films; the last of the four was released in early 2009. (Futurama. Internet Movie Database) Comedy Central entered into an agreement with 20th Century Fox Television to syndicate the existing episodes and air the films as 16 new, half-hour episodes. Comedy Central began airing Futurama on January 2, 2008, and had new episodes starting on March 23, 2008. (ITZKOFF, DAVE pg 1) The first new episode that premiered on Comedy Central was called “Rebirth” and poked fun at FOX for cancelling them. Futurama has six seasons already and a seventh in production and due to premiere. Futurama won the Guinness World Record for "Current Most Critically-Acclaimed Animated Series" in 2010 and has been nominated for thirteen Annie awards and eight Emmy awards, winning seven and three respectfully. (Futurama. Internet Movie Database)
When Futurama was first aired on FOX it received generally low ratings due and didn’t accumulate a strong fan base until its re-runs were aired regularly on Adult Swim. Not many people knew about the show because it wasn’t an instant hit and FOX constantly moved its time spot, making it hard to follow and sometimes even dropped the show for long periods of time. Although it wasn’t popular on FOX and some fans of Futurama don’t even know it was ever on FOX, it wasn’t completely unknown. Critics and fans raved about the possibility of Futurama becoming a hit television show and expressed disappointment about the show being cancelled arguing that it never got the chance to accumulate a strong fan base due to its erratic time schedule. Futurama finally got the fan base it needed on Adult Swim and Cartoon Network with a normal steady time schedule. It was this new fan base that got Futurama brought back on the air again with new episodes on Comedy Central (Futurama. Internet Movie Database). An example of a fan review while Futurama was in syndication is; “Futurama is the whipping boy of modern prime time cartoons. Since it was made by the creator of the Simpsons it was expected to be exactly like it. Futurama had its own brand of comedic flair, which is absolutely hilarious. Bender, Fry, Leela, Hermes, Zoidberg, all of these characters are well thought out and work incredibly well together, on top of the fact that situations and anecdotes from previous episodes are brought up all the time, adding continuity to an already excellent series. I'll admit that I too was among the people crying foul when Futurama first came out, I didn't grow to truly appreciate it until it was put in syndication on adult...
