In 1982 the company Johnson & Johnson, recalled 31 million bottles of Tylenol from store shelves after eight people in the United States died from cyanide-laced capsules. The recall cost Johnson & Johnson $240 million dollars and cut its profit on five billion dollars in revenue in 1982 by almost 50 percent. Although the tampering was no fault towards the company, Johnson & Johnson decided to act before it had complete information on the entirety of the unfortunate situation. The twenty individuals participating in the study are given the same curriculum and placed into two separate groups. Within these separate groupings, the first will be taught through the traditional lecture model while the second, utilizes the Socratic Method, with both groups intermittently given opportunities to functionally execute their learning experiences within the churches community. The data collected from this research study is received through the process of in-depth interviews of those who both participated within the curriculum and conducted community outreach. The significance of this study is two-fold. First, due to the limited research given towards the pedagogical methodology within Christian education, the study may lead towards a major educational discovery that could positively affect ecclesiastical settings. Second, the study may inform African American churches that the strategy which leads towards the promotion of sociological transformation within their communities, is correlated to the pedagogical approach of which is utilized within its Christian education programs.
In conducting a research study of this magnitude the writer can perceive four ethical dilemmas in which could possibly be observed on the forefront of conducting this study in which must be addressed. These issues are comprised of informed consent, anonymity and confidentiality, respect for privacy, and beneficence.
Consent is understood as the functional process by which the researcher grants the participant the option to choose whether or not they desire to participate within the given research study (Best & Kahn, 2005). This level of participant consent is not a simplistic, “Yes, I will participate,” but rather consent given after the participant knowingly understands the extent of the research, that their participation is voluntary, and intelligently is able to grant their willingness of participation within the research study (Armiger, 1997).
Within this writers research study informed consent must be conducted and received within two dynamics, through both substitute and direct consent. The first level of consent must be given towards those who hold leadership within the church, which is understood as substitute consent. Substitute consent is the approach of consent given by someone other than direct individual serving as the participant (Roberts, Geppert, Coverland, Louie, & Edenharder, 2005). Theologically, it is the role of the existing leadership, which holds the responsibility of protecting parishioners within the church. This leadership model could be displayed within the form of a senior pastor, an established elder or trustee board, deacons, or the congregation as a whole determining the particular polity in which exists within the church.
