Assignment F

1237 words - 5 pages

I would have never realized what kind of experience I had back in 2002 if it wasn't for my current class in 2013 at the University of Texas at Dallas. Reading and Writing Texts was a class that I didn't really know what I was getting into till a week or two had already passed. By then I realized I enjoyed it quite a bit despite my lack of writing skills when it came to essays. It was when we began to read the stories by Hoffman, Pratt, Anzaldua, Rodriguez, Damrosch, Valery, Thuesen, and Liu that I realized I had a similar experience that these writers talked about. Though most of them talked about negative experiences with contact zones between cultures I would like to talk about a positive ...view middle of the document...

It was either in the late 1990's or the early 2000's, about 50 years later, that he received a phone call out of the blue after loosing hope of ever finding his friend again. It was Cricket “Hello is this...”. He had finally been able to find the correct Moon family over here in America and to say the least he was over joyed. After that Cricket came to visit my Grandfather and his family two to three times by himself. It was on his fourth visit that he brought along his Daughter and her two children. A young ten year old boy and a 15 year old girl.

The town I lived in was mostly Caucasian, Mexican, and Black so I had little experience with anyone from Asian countries. This was probably the cause for a majority of my curiosity and excitement but who could blame me in such a small town? The dinner that Crickets Daughter prepared for us was a Korean Spaghetti, rice wrapped in seasoned seaweed wraps, and some red pepper paste to season it. This food was the doorway of my love for foods that were not normally in my hometown and Korean food in general.
At the time all we had were fast food places like McDonalds, Taco Bell, Braums, Sonic, and Subway. The restaurants we had were all either American food, Mexican food, and maybe one Chinese restaurant. So my selections at the time were extremely limited unless we went to Amarillo and then we were able to have Japanese or Italian. But none of these were truly authentic to the foods from the countries they came from. While we were there I quickly realized that the Grand-kids seemed to be hiding from us upstairs but I didn't want to push the issue being they seemed rather shy.
It was when we took them to my Grandmothers farm that I was finally able to truly get into a situation where they couldn't go hide from me or avoid interacting with me. I didn't want to come off to forward and scare them off so I started out with something simple...
