Attention Deficit Disorder Essay

Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) or Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder ADHD (ADHD) is a disorder that affects many functions that your brain provides. ADD and ADHD are the names that you would know this adolescent by. Although people with ADD/ADHD have a harder time concentrating and focusing in school and as they move on in life, through education, medications and other treatments, children with ADD, can overcome some of the symptoms of this adolescent and live to their fullest potential. In Thomas Brown’s book on ADD, he described it as, “ADD is a complex disorder that involves impairments in focus, organization, motivation, emotional modulation, and other functions of the brains ...view middle of the document...

These medications are not the only way to improving focus and other symptoms of ADD. There are also regular drugs for taking when diagnosed of ADD as explained in Thomas Phelans book of “Surviving you Adolescents.” One story talks about a woman diagnosed with ADD symptoms from her doctor taking omega-3 fish oils, B-complex vitamins and an herbal 8 supplement called pycnogenol. Later seen, she had significant improvements and less signs of ADD in the next few weeks.
Now this does not mean that if you are diagnosed with symptoms of ADD/ADHD that you can turn to medication prescriptions, this method does have its pros and cons. Cons as stated in Eileen Beals book on ADD/ADHD may vary from “appetite and weight loss, loss of sleep, headaches or stomach aches, sleepiness, sadness, and increased hyperactivity.” Her book also states the pros of taking medication, “increased focus and concentration, less hyperactivity, less impulsive behavior, less aggressive behavior, better grades and better social interaction.” (20-21) Taking a look at these two lists, one would observe that taking medication is a gamble. One is not guaranteed better focus through medication and could actually lose focus and gain worse symptoms.
Taking medication is not the only option for improved behavior and self-management. There are techniques for one to take to improve focus and attention. These techniques as stated in Eileen Beal’s book, “get organized, make lists, create routines, learn to negotiate and exercise.” (32-33) These little things that might seem easy for one who is not affected by ADD/ADHD, but these are the main things that are very hard when one is affected by ADD/ADHD.
