Throughout the 1930s life was very different than it is today as it was a time of racism and segregation. Living with racism and segregation was different for all people in the 1930s.this was also with Grant and Atticus, their lives are quite different, but they are also similar too. In To Kill a Mockingbird and The Lesson Before Dying, Atticus and Grant played a large role in their novels. Atticus stated this when he was explaining to scout of why he is defending Tom Robinson. This shows that Atticus and Grant are similar due to their passion of learning.
Grant and Atticus were both entrusted in big responsibilities that affected other people’s lives. Grant was entrusted in helping out Jefferson as he was accused of murdering 3 men but he was unfortunately at the wrong place at the wrong time. Miss Emma wanted Grant to visit Jefferson, in his prison, and help him regain his pride before he is to die. Miss Emma said, “I don’t them to kill no hog. I want a man to go on to that chair, on his own two feet.” (Gaines 13) Miss Emma said this as Jefferson was called a hog and she wants him to die with pride. Just like Grant was entrusted with big responsibilities, likewise Atticus was entrusted with big responsibilities. Atticus was responsible for Tom Robinson’s case. Tom was falsely accused of raping Mayella Ewell, he was at the wrong place at the wrong time. Even though Atticus was white, he still defended Tom Robinson who was black and Atticus defended him as best as he could. Since Atticus is a lawyer, he is responsible for cases of many other people as well. Atticus and Grant are both entrusted to big responsibilities showing that they are similar.
Although Grant and Atticus are Similar in many ways, they both have different lifestyles due to many factors. Grant is still a young man in his twenties. He does not have any children and he is not married. Grant is black so he has to live with racism and segregation. Due to racism, Grant has to live through many more difficulties than Atticus.
