The topic for today’s reading was Augmentative Communication Systems-VOCAs. The OCALI Module, Speech Generating Devices, was based on the use of speech generating devices (SGD) in children and youth with ASD to communicate with others, and how it can provide a variety of communication functions, such as requesting, protesting, and greetings. SGDs are an example of an augmentative and alternative communication system (AAC) designed to help learners with limited speech communicate and interact within a social context. There is an enormous range of SGD at the market from single message devices to devices with dynamic screen and unlimited vocabulary, and they can be used by learners who are non-verbal, by learners who are verbal and speech has reduces to intelligibility, or by learners who may prefer SGD to speaking. Evidence-based studies have shown that speech-generating devices are effective in increasing expressive language for learners with autism struggling with verbal speech. Nevertheless, to ensure that SGD is being used successfully, professionals may consider factors like a vocabulary that motivates learners and symbols that can be discriminated at some point by learners. SGDs should be used across multiple environments and with different communication partners to promote generalization and maintenance of skills. However, it is important that used strategies are as subtle as possible when teaching learners to use SGD, so that learners do not become dependent upon practitioners during the communication exchanges.
