What is Autism Spectrum Disorder and how does it affect those who have it, both physically and psychologically? Autism Spectrum Disorder affects a substantial amount of the population. It is a complex, neurological spectrum condition that damages standard brain function, affecting the development of an individual’s communication and social skills. As a result, Autistic patients often experience repetitive behaviors, lack of spoken language, and may face amplified medical conditions. Although there is no present cure, treatment options, such as medication and therapeutic activities, are available to improve the patient’s quality of life. Autism Spectrum Disorder is a disorder that can be detrimental to the infected individual.
Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and Autism are both general terms for a group of lifelong neurological growth disorders. These disorders are often characterized by an individual’s difficulty in social interaction, verbal and nonverbal communication, and repetitive behaviors. Recently, genetic specialists have identified a number of rare gene mutations and crossovers associated with autism (The National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH). In most cases, the disorder appears to be the result of a combination of autism risk genes and environmental factors influencing early brain development. While all people with autism share certain difficulties, the condition affects each individual in different ways. Some autistic patients are able to live relatively independent lives but others may have accompanying learning disabilities and need a lifetime of specialist support. People with autism often experience over or under sensitivity to sounds, touch, smells, light or colors (The National Autistic Society, 2013).
Unusual repetitive behaviors and a tendency to engage in a restricted range of activities are core symptoms of autism. Common repetitive behaviors include hand-flapping, rocking, jumping, walking in a specific pattern or repeating sounds, words, and phrases (Nordqvist, 2008). Commonly, the repetitive behavior can be self-stimulating, such as wiggling a finger in front of their eyes. These behaviors can also take the form of a intense preoccupation, such as learning all about vacuums or train schedules. Autism Speaks Inc. states that the autistic brain function can be clearly seen by the way children with autism play with toys, “Some spend hours lining up toys in a specific way instead of using them for pretend play…it can prove extremely upsetting if someone or something disrupts the order” (Autism Speaks Inc., 2013).
