Fruits are healthy complex carbohydrates which contain plenty of vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and fiber. Carbohydrates help store and transport energy throughout your body. Vitamins and minerals boost your immune system to fight off viruses and help your body grow and function. They also help support your bones, heal wounds, boost your immune system, convert food into energy, and repair cellular damage. Vitamins and minerals are micro-nutrients, nutrients that are vital for health but are only consumed in small amounts. Vitamins and minerals differ in various ways. Vitamins are organic and can be broken down by heat, air or acid, which is why scientists recommend eating raw fruits and vegetables due to the fact that raw fruits and vegetables contain more nutrients than cooked fruits and vegetables. Vitamins also help reduce the risk of receiving cancer and other chronic (long lasting) diseases. Minerals are inorganic and hold on to their nutrients even if they are cooked or exposed to air. Antioxidants fight oxidative stress, which is when molecules inside your body loose electrons which transfer to oxygen in your bloodstream (also called “free radicals”) which may cause damage to cellular DNA, and can lead to diseases. Antioxidants keep your level of free radicals low and keep you in good health. They also lower your risk of receiving cancer, cardiovascular disease (heart disease), cognitive impairment, cataracts ( clouding of the eye lenses), Alzheimer's disease (loss of brain function; affects memory, thinking and behavior), macular degeneration (eye disease), mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and immune dysfunction ( malfunction of the immune system). Fiber are carbohydrates that your body can not digest or absorb. Fiber boosts immune system in your gut, feeds the good probiotic bacteria there, keeps the digestive lining healthy and absorbs and pulls out excess hormones, cholesterol, fat and toxins from the body.
