Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, ADHD, is a behavior disability that affects children from 6-12 years of age and continues to show symptoms later in their adult life. Even though large amounts of the population are affected by ADHD, it is still unknown as to what the exact cause of ADHD. Depending on what type of diagnostic is used, there are anywhere from 1-2% to 6-7% of children around the world that have ADHD. Even though the exact cause of ADHD is not known, there are many people that believe that it is a combination of genetics and environment. ADHD is currently unable to be cured, but there are several treatment plans that work to combat the symptoms and help children maintain focus in a classroom. Many of these treatment plans are a combination of medication and therapy. There are side effects to both treatment plans. ADHD and its treatment on a whole are considered controversial since the first patients were diagnosed. While the cause and cure of ADHD are not known, the various ideas behind ADHD and the various treatment philosophies are concerning to parents, teachers and caregivers. Discovering the cause of ADHD is something that is being researched all over the world.
When researchers find the cause of ADHD, people that have it will be able to recover from it. In the meantime; students with ADHD, teachers and parents of students with ADHD need to know the basic things about it. They need to know the background of ADHD, they need to know treatment options and they need to know how to help the student at home and at school.
Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder is characterized by inattention, overactivity, and impulsivity. Most children are identified and treated in primary school. Studies indicate that five percent of children worldwide show impaired levels of attention, as well as hyperactivity. Boys are classified with ADHD about twice as frequently as girls. Primary school age children are classified approximately twice as frequently as adolescents. ADHD symptoms exist on a continuum in the general population, and are considered as a ‘disorder’ to a greater or lesser degree depending on the source of identification, (e.g., parent or teacher), perception of extent of functional impairment, diagnostic criteria, and the threshold chosen for defining a ‘case.’ The developmentally excessive levels of inattention, overactivity, and impulsivity characteristic of ADHD are present from an early age. However, preschoolers with early signs of ADHD may also have co-occurring oppositional noncompliant behaviors, temper tantrums, and aggression that overshadow symptoms of inattention and overactivity and confound the diagnosis. These behaviors may be given the more general label of a Disruptive Behavior Disorder (DBD), which include Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD) and Conduct Disorder (CD) as well as ADHD.
