Cindy Jackson sets a new world record with fifty-two cosmetic procedures in 2011 and she stills hold on the record for the most procedures ever undergone by one person today. Cindy Jackson was the daughter of American investor who grew up in Ohio. She wasn’t very good looking and therefore she admired her sister who was breathtakingly beautiful. Jackson obsessed with looking like a Barbie doll since she was six years old and she never grow out of it. When she was thirty- three, she inherited some money after her father passed away. Later, she decided to invest all her money in her appearance to make her dream come true. At first, she started with reshaped her upper and lower eyelids to wider her eyes. Then, she moved on to liposuction on her knees, collagen injections, nose jobs, breast implants, cheekbone reshaping and implants, and microdermabrasion. After twenty years of effort, she finally became like a Barbie doll which she always dreamed. She has spent over $100,000 on these cosmetic procedures over the years which included fourteen full-scale operations, Botox, five face-lifts and liposuction, and reshaped her eyelids twice. Although she is fifty-seven years old this year, she just look like around thirty. With her experiences in cosmetic surgery, she is now a respected cosmetic surgery advisor, author, famous artist and she even has developed her own microdermabrasion product. All these procedures that she has suffered in the name of beauty is to look younger and better. According to Cindy Jackson, all these things that she did is to achieve her ideal of beauty- looking like a real Barbie doll. However, this raises the question regarding to beauty, that is what is the definition of beauty and who set the standard of ideal beauty?
According to dictionary, beauty is defined as “the combination of all the qualities of a person or thing that delight the senses and please the mind”. (Anderson) In the real world, the definition of beauty are different among society. Most of the societies define beauty by the color of skin, eyes, body shape, and appearance. On the other hand, some societies may think that physical appearance is not important as appearance may change over time, but the beauty of our heart will never change. Therefore, beauty can be broken down into two categories: outer beauty and inner beauty. Outer beauty simply refer to a person’s appearance, this include their face, hair, skin color, body shape and even clothing. Inner beauty demonstrate by the real personality of a person, which include love, kindness, empathy, sympathy, wisdom and etc. Besides, the idea of beauty are varies depends on one’s society, culture, religion and idol.
