Becoming an Effective Practitioner
Giving quality care and support to patients, relatives and service users is very important as the treatment they receive (NHS, 2013). It is important for patients and service users to have positive experience in the healthcare settings, making sure they are cared for compassionately, respecting and maintain their dignity at all times (Ellis, 2010; Royal College of Nursing (RCN) (2006). This essay focuses on validity of a qualitative research studies. The aim is to use CASP Tool to critique a research article “Exploring patients’ self-reported experiences of out-of-hours primary care and their suggestions for improvement: a qualitative study” by Poole et al (2011) chosen from the National Health Service (NHS) frame work (2013) domain 4 (Ensuring people have a positive experience of care). Furthermore, CASP will be use to critic this article to know if users have had a negative or positive experience during out-of-hours and to develop on suggested program on improving on services by the service users including the practitioners.
Critical Appraisal skills program (CASP) will be defined and will be later use to critically appraise the research mentioned above. The importance of evidence based (EBP) in healthcare settings would be briefly explained. Lastly validity, strength and weakness of the study would be looked into and to conclude if it’s or not fair enough to be used or modified services to patients and service users in care settings.
Critical appraisal skills program is the method by which a research is been carefully examined in a systematically way to know how valuable, applicable reliable and relevant it is in a practice (Burls, 2009; Buckingham et al 2008). Furthermore it is a process by which healthcare research gives important evidence that helps in giving care in the medical settings by assessing and interpreting and evaluating research in a systematically order to proof the worth and the value of evidence (Barker 2010). Therefore it is important healthcare professionals find best available evidenced based research efficiently to be able to give high standard of care and be able to practise safely at all times as this is in accordance with nursing and midwifery council (NMC) 2008; Craig and Smith, 2002).
Evidence based practice (EBP) is thought to be a careful, open, and thoughtful use of current best valid, valuable, relevance, applicable “evidence in making decisions about the care of individual patients” (Sackett et al. 1996, p. 169)”. In addition, EBP integrates a person’s clinical knowledge and skills with the best available evidence from research studies (Sackett et al. 1996). Subsequently it gives the most excellent external evidence to professionals as it express valuable integration of evidence making their clinical decision-making (DH, 2000). This external evidence gives information, but does not replace medical expertise which it is only medic’s experts that integrate evidence into...
