It is a given that humans have succeeded in the struggle for existence by exploiting our natural environment. But how much can you misuse something before it is rendered useless? In general, vegetarian diets consists of items rich with calcium; this leads to vegetarians’ bones being stronger for a long time.2 Staying healthy reduces medical bills and lessens the need for antibiotics.5
Additionally, adopting a vegetarian diet brings a good change in a person’s social health. For example, studies have shown that vegetarians are more physically active, drink less, and smoke less.6 They also have higher socioeconomic status.6 By finding different ways to spend time, vegetarians focus less on eating and therefore do not feel hungry all the time. The average BMI for vegetarian women is 23.7 and for non-vegetarian women it is 25.9.7 While for the men, the BMI is 24.33 is the average of the vegetarians and 26.2 for the meat eaters.7 Staying at a healthy weight lessens the risk of strokes and heart attacks, and removes many risk factors of cancer. When compared to non-vegetarians, vegetarians have ½ the high blood pressure and diabetes and 2/3 the rheumatoid arthritis.7 Along with illnesses related to the heart, there is also a decrease of many other diseases in vegetarians.
Although we may not realize it, there are many risks invol¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬ved with consuming any type of food; eating meat can actually increase the risk of getting several diseases. Therefore, along with adopting a vegetarian diet, it is important to choose organic foods to have the most benefit. A vegetarian diet consists of more healthy forms of vitamins and minerals since it is less exposed to chemicals. This may be the reason why, on average, vegetarians live about 7 years longer than meat eaters and are 40% less likely to develop cancer.5
Vegetarianism contributes to good health; whether it is social health or physical. There are many benefits in becoming a vegetarian and therefore, more people should consider adopting a vegetarian lifestyle. According to the United States Department of Agriculture, however, only 5% of Americans considered themselves as vegetarians.4 In order to reduce the risk of getting certain diseases and living longer, being a vegetarian is the best option there is.
