Deregulating transportation would have several benefits to American motorists and pedestrians. By deregulation of transportation I mean having very limited traffic laws. This entails removing most traffic signs, specifically those that inform drivers of the laws. In addition, all traffic control devices should be removed, this includes: traffic signals, speed bumps, rumble strips and other traffic control features. Even though opponents say this would cause complete anarchy on the road, traffic laws and control devices should be removed. Eradicating laws leads to safer driving habits and removing control devices and excessive signage increases the attention of drivers.

With the removal of traffic laws comes the removal of traffic signs such as posted speed limits and no U-turn signs. Drachten, a Dutch city, took down all signs and road markings. After doing so the city saw a significant decline in traffic accidents. This caused drivers and pedestrians to focus more attention on what was happening around them and acting accordingly rather than relying on traffic signs. By training drivers to rely on signs instead of their own judgment, traffic authorities are promoting what psychologists call "inattentional blindness."(European Towns Remove Traffic Signs to Make Streets Safer) This is when someone fails to notice a fully visible, yet unexpected object because his or her attention was focused on another task, or object.
The elimination of traffic control devices save motorists’ time and money. For example, four way intersections should be removed and replaced with rotaries. The Myth busters, two men who have a television show prove or disprove myths, tested the myth that rotaries are more efficient when it comes to traffic flow than a four-way intersection. They found that there is approximately a twenty percent increase in the number of cars that can pass through a rotary compared to the four-way intersection. I will also cite Washington States’ DOT website. It says rotaries are: safer, improve traffic flow, less expensive to build and maintain, and take up less space.
