Cedar City, Utah is a beautiful place. It is located in southern Utah just a few minutes north of Zion National Park and loads of outdoor recreation locations. There is so much to do and see in the nearby mountains and parks. I was raised in that beautiful city since I was a little baby, about 1 year old. I love the city and much of my family, including my parents, still lives there. It is my true home and it is where I would like to be. I want to live close to family, but there is one colossal obstacle standing between me and living near my family, there aren’t many high-paying jobs in southern Utah ("Utah.gov Services Job Search”).
The jobs that are available are low paying jobs for people with little education. Most of the available jobs are in the service industry working at a restaurant, working for a large business as an associate for example working at Walmart, or working as a laborer for a construction company. These are jobs, but they aren’t careers, they cannot sustain a comfortable lifestyle or fund a retirement. These jobs only pay enough for a single person to pay their bills. One of the main industries in southern Utah is construction. A construction worker can only work for so long. Eventually, their bodies will give out and they won’t be able to work. I have two brothers-in-law that work in construction and they live from paycheck to paycheck. They are getting older and older, but their retirement is getting any bigger. They can’t work this way forever. Eventually they will need to get less physically taxing jobs.
There is a university in Cedar City, Southern Utah University. It is a respected university and has some great programs. There is only one problem with this. There is a place to get an education in order to be qualified for a better job that pays well, but there aren’t very many jobs in the area for the students to get after they graduate. The graduates must move away in order to find employment. If the graduates don’t move away they probably won’t find a job and if they do it won’t pay as well as it would in many other places. We have loads of educated people, but no jobs to give them. This is a big problem, but there are some things that you can do as a city council to help the situation.
The need for high-paying high-education jobs in Cedar City can be alleviated by giving tax breaks and benefits to companies that can provide better paying jobs that require an education and by offering graduates entrepreneurial grants. The city council and the county determine how companies in the area will be taxed. This puts you in a perfect position to entice companies to open new branches in southern Utah and bring jobs to the area. The university is the life blood of the city. Increasing the number of employment opportunities and elevating the class of employment options in Cedar City will significantly benefit the city and the university. As the one benefits so will the other.
