Human population is expected to rise to 9 billion by 2050.(Michaels, 2012) Looking at this stat just makes one wonder, whether there will be enough food or land for all those 9 billion people.(Michaels, 2012) Fortunately, scientists have found a possible way to solve the food problem which is more important than land in today’s time. However, there are consequences with this new modified food.
Genetically modified foods have been introduced for many reasons; one reason is because of climate change. (Michaels, 2012) Weather has become so unpredictable, that food crops are getting destroyed, whether the temperature is too low, not enough rain causing drought in some areas, or other natural ...view middle of the document...

(Butler, 2012) Further tests and experiments have failed to show any of the rat’s health effects bringing the methodology and findings of the experiments into questioning by other scientists. (Butler, 2012) Thus, the danger of modified foods continues to be unknown.
The best advantage of genetically modified foods is the ability to increase the lifespan of food crops. For example, in winter tomatoes get softer and tasteless when they are transferred across the country. (“Genetically modified organism”, 2011) In order for the tomatoes to be shipped in good quality to grocery stores they are sent before they get ripped, however, the appearance and taste of that tomato is not as good. (“Genetically modified organism”, 2011) So by inserting a gene into the tomatoes’ DNA, the proteins that break down the cell walls are stopped, and the tomato continues to be in good quality shape until its put on the shelves for consumers to buy. (“Genetically modified organism”, 2011)
The biggest health concern as mentioned before is the unknown effects of genetically modified foods. Canola oil is a very good example of genetically modified foods. Canola oil is in fact considered a toxic and poisonous weed, however, because of its unsaturated structure and digestibility, it is considered safe. (“Genetically modified organism”, 2011) Yet, it has shown to cause health problems such as lung cancer, respiratory illness, and heart disease. (“Genetically modified organism”, 2011) Furthermore, introducing new genes to the environment has its own effects, for example, the use of herbicide by farmers to remove weeds, also damages the crop plants unless it’s genetically engineered. There is also a concern on the contention of using these kinds of chemicals, because some fear that weed may become immune to it, which would make it hard to deal with, so it’s safer to minimize the use of these chemicals, rather than spreading it around the world. (“Genetically modified organism”, 2011)
