Nació el 24 de febrero de 1955 en San Francisco, California. Hijo de una pareja de estudiantes sirios que lo entregan en adopción. Del bebé se hacen cargo Paul y Clara Jobs, un matrimonio de origen armenio. Sus padres biológicos tendrían otra hija, la escritora Mona Simpson, a la que Steve no conocería hasta ser adulto. Cursó estudios en el Reed College en Portland, Oregon. Amigo de Steven Wozniak desde la escuela secundaria. Ambos tenían interés por la electrónica. Siguieron en contacto después de graduarse, y los dos llegaron a trabajar para compañías en Sillicon Valley. (Woz para Hewlett-Packard, Jobs para Atari). Wozniak había estado trabajando en el diseño de un ordenador cuando en 1976, diseñó lo que sería el Apple I. Jobs, insistió en la venta de la máquina y el 1 de abril de 1976, fue la fecha de fundación de la Apple Computer. La Apple II fue una máquina que llamaba la atención, porque era la primera computadora personal que venía en una carcasa de plástico e incluía gráficos en color. Después de su lanzamiento las órdenes de compra de las máquinas de Apple se multiplicaron varias veces y, a principios del '78, las ventas crecieron aún más con la introducción de la Apple Disk II, la disquetera más económica y fácil de usar (para la época). Sin embargo, el crecimiento de las ventas trajo consigo un aumento en el tamaño de la empresa y, cuando se lanzó la Apple III en 1980, Apple contaba con varios miles de empleados y comenzaba a vender computadoras al exterior. La empresa debió contratar gerentes de nivel medio de mayor experiencia y lo que era aún más importante, incorporó nuevos inversores, quienes tomaron sus asientos en la Junta Directiva. De mayor edad y más conservadores, los nuevos directores se encargaron de convertir a Apple en una "verdadera empresa".

Jobs y varios ingenieros comenzaron a desarrollar el Lisa, que redefiniría la computación personal. Jobs dejó todo a cargo de Mikke Markkula, presidente de Apple, y uno de los accionistas mayores.
