Part of the population today is addicted to sugar, which then leads to a great concern when it comes to being obese. In attempt to try to live a healthy life, people today are relying on artificial sweeteners as being the way to go to lose weight. With this notion, the question still today is if artificial sweeteners are healthy. This paper will discuss the biological effects that artificial sweeteners have on a person’s body and to see whether or not consuming them causes more harm than good.

Aspartame is 180 times sweeter than regular sugar, which triggers our taste buds the moment it hits them. Aspartame is known to be in energy drinks, regular drinks, snacks, and yogurt.
The components of aspartame occur naturally in foods, but aspartame it self must be manufactured through a process of fermentation and synthesis. Aspartame gets metabolized through the gastrointestinal tract where the peptide bonds and ester bonds are then broken, separating the methanol and amino acids. Next, methanol in the body turns into formaldehyde, which then turns into formic acid, which is a compound, associated with causing cancer. Aspartame is an artificial, non-saccharide sweetener.
According to wpi.edu it states that “aspartame is the methyl ester of the dipeptide of L-aspartic acid and L-phenylalanine. Shows the metabolism (hydrolysis) of aspartame in the intestine. Hydrolysis of aspartame occurs in both the intestinal lumen and mucosal cells by proteolytic and hydrolytic enzymes. The byproducts, aspartate, phenylalanine, and methanol are released into the portal blood. Since grossly elevated plasma phenylalanine concentrations are associated with mental retardation (as is found in children with phenylketonuria), its metabolism is of primary concern. To this day though the validity of aspartame is still being questioned. It is said that people with PKU should avoid aspartame due to not having the enzyme to metabolize phenylalanine.”
