Black Cumin Seeds As An Alternative To Chemotherapy

891 words - 4 pages

Introduction
Blood cancer is a life-threatening disease that includes: leukemia, lymphoma and myeloma (American Society of Hematology). Leukemia is classified into myeloid and lymphoid leukemia. Each type has acute and chronic phases. Leukemia reduces the ability of white blood cells (WBCs) to fight infection (American Society of Hematology). In addition, leukemia limits the bone marrow’s ability to produce red blood cells (RBCs) (American Society of Hematology). It is one of the most common cancers in the world and can be treated by chemotherapy and bone marrow transplant.

, 2011). Because it contains the miraculous component TQ, black cumin should be able to minimize the rapid production of WBCs so that the bone morrow will be able to produce RBCs. In addition, the side effects of chemotherapy can be avoided by using a natural herb. Further, chemotherapy is expensive and many patients cannot afford it, but black seeds are affordable.
A rat model can be used for this study and the following research question will be asked:
After three months of receiving black seed treatment, do cancer-infested rats have a significantly lower cancer cell count than cancer-infested rats who do not receive black seed treatment?
Importance and significance
As revealed in the literature review, researchers have studied different types of leukemia and the effects that chemotherapy has on leukemia patients. Even though chemotherapy has revealed a high rate of survival among patients, not all patients have survived. For example, one study resulted in some of the participants dying within the 8 week period of the study (Kantarjian et al., 2010). This study revealed that intensive chemotherapy cannot be administered to the older population of patients with acute myeloid leukemia (AML) based on their age and on the medication, they cannot tolerate the intensive dose of chemotherapy
The importance of this study relies on two factors:
1. Using folk medicine, in this case as Nigella Sativa (NS), instead of chemotherapy to treat leukemia patients of all ages.
2. Eliminating the possibility of side effects
Seeing people died from leukemia and others suffered from the side effect of chemotherapy was the main motivation for for pursuing this research study. It will likely take up to one year to obtain the desired results; nevertheless they will be helpful for...
