Body Image Concerns in Adolescents: The Impact and Influence of Social Media on Students’ Body Images and Its Remedies
As the mass media and the social media have become the essential tools to become socialized with people, body image concerns in adolescents have become critical problems regarding eating disorders such as anorexia nervosa or bulimia nervosa, or body dissatisfaction. They continue, “It is linked to self-esteem and to the individual’s emotional stability” (2). People with anorexia nervosa, as defined by the American Psychological Association, suffer from: “a distorted body image that causes them to see themselves as overweight even they are dangerously thin. Often refusing to eat, exercising compulsively, and developing unusual habits such as refusing to eat in front of others, they lose large amounts of weight and may even starve to death” (APA). The psychological reason of having eating disorders is typically perceived to become generated in anxiety and obsessive-compulsive related phenomena. Usually, in diagnosing eating disorders, doctors or psychologists primarily look at factors within the personal such as the traumatic life or events of patients regarding depression or dissatisfaction. In the way of diagnosing, psychologists also look at the family history of patients or inherited traits.
Fawkner explains, “Body dissatisfaction appears to be consistent among women irrespective of age, relationship status, educational level, or occupational status” (175). Fawkner’s assertion is effectively supporting that people who are having eating disorders perhaps have had traumatic life events or traits in those past days. Especially among adolescents, they are not enough grown up to manage their emotions and to make considerable decisions about the things shown through the mass media and the social media as much as adults. The research of Fawkner supports the claim of how the mass media and the social media in the contemporary world manipulate their customers or viewers – especially the adolescents who are not capable of making the right decisions – and attempt to make psychological relationships which deeply touch those of what can trigger body dissatisfaction among women and adolescents.
As the era of technology advanced, the mass media and the social media are existing almost everywhere since after the early 2002, and people including adolescents are easily exposed to the technology society and have become to tend to judge people their body dissatisfaction on “the difference between an ideal body shape/size and perceived own body shape/size” (Rumsey 130). The association between attractiveness and thinness, idolized characteristics is spontaneously reinforced and stereotyped by the social environment. These arousing influences may come up with the lack of parents’ knowledge and the limited amount of data of the influence of the media. In reference to Smolak’s research, “An analysis of books and videos aimed at 4-8-year-olds indicated that most of the videos (72%) associated physical attractiveness with being loved” (Rumsey 125). Her research apparently supports and explains in what kind of circumstance adolescents have been growing up with biased physical attractiveness, since when they were young.
