Molluscum Contagiosum is a common STI and virus contracted by millions of people annually. According to the article "Molluscum Contagiosum" by Ashish C. Bhatia, "Bateman first described the disease in 1817, and Paterson demonstrated its infectious nature in 1841. In 1905, Juliusburg proved its viral nature" (2012). Molluscom has been documented for centuries, its motives have not changed, and the same can be said about the nature of this virus. Molluscum Contagiosum is a type of virus that affects the skin, infecting anyone and everyone who crosses its path. Through years of research, scientists have found four different subclasses of the Molluscum Contagiosum virus (MCV); MCV 1 is the most common. Most occurrences of this virus are in children, due to close environments such as, school or places with hot climates and poor hygiene (Draper, 2010). This virus is considered an STI as well as a type of poxvirus, infecting the skin of all who cross its path. Molloscum is transmitted through other means of physical contact, besides the act of sexual intercourse. This is why Molluscum Contagiosum is one of the most common viral infections around the world.
The virus can quickly spread through a population, if a single person is infected. Since this infection is not exclusive to sexual intercourse, people need to be on the lookout if they are infected. Since Molluscum is considered an STI, which means, this infection can be spread through sexual intercourse. Vaginal and anal intercourses are the most common ways of contracting this disease but performing unprotected oral sex is a risk factor as well. Even though Molluscum is contracted often by sex but this infection can be contracted without the act of sex. This is what makes this virus contagious because, anyone can contract or spread the infection through casual contact, even sharing of clothing or towels. Once the infection has incubated, the virus is spreadable to different areas of the body by scratching, itching or rubbing (Planned Parenthood, 2013). These are the factors, which contribute to the spread of this infection through a population.
When a person wanting to know if they have contracted this common STI or virus there are a few symptoms to look for, this will be signs of infection. There are a few common symptoms of the Molluscum virus, in which, people can be on the lookout to confirm infection, and one is growths. A self-examination in a mirror, looking for small waxy, growths in different areas across the body because, Molluscum can be spread throughout the body. These growths are the main signs of infection, if there is confirmation of growths these areas or other areas on the body examine them closely. When looking at these growths, look for indentions in the middle of each of the growth, a signature of the Molluscum infection; these growths are often raised, flesh colored, white, or pink (CDC, 2011).
