Dear diary, things have been awful different 'round here lately with them Finch kids running amuck. I can see them playin' outside when I sit by the window. There's something about them... Maybe they remind me of myself when I was young. The other day the older one, Jem I think his name is? Anyway The batch of them came around here the other day and Jem came right up to touch the house. I know they think I'm a monster or some sort, but I just wanna keep 'em safe. My pa here ain't the kind of man to take kindly to curious little ones creeping 'round here, no, he wouldn't like that at all. And then there's the girl, Scout I've heard 'em call her. Sometimes i get to wondering if things have gone and changed since i was young, but after hearin' Crawford say what she said, it doesn't seem like it. Even a lonely fellow like me knows that the world ain't a fair place, 'specially to anyone who dares to go against what’s "accepted".
Those kids are proper insane! Last night they tried to sneak on into my house. They came ‘round the back and tried to climb through one of the windows. It shouldn't surprise me that Nathan took his gun out and shot at them and that sure scared ‘em off nice and easy. I said to Nathan, "What are you doing, shooting at them kids? You coulda one of them!" Nathan glowered at me like an annoyin fly and said, "What are they thinkin’ trying to get into my house?" I said I didn't know, but theyre just children, real young to be burglars. I asked Nathan if he was gonna go and tell Mr. Finch ‘bout it, but he said he wasn't. I wanted to do somethin’ real bad, I didn’t like seein’ the Funch kids all scared... The Finch boy left his pants in our fence. I took them off the fence and I'm trying to mend them, but sewing isn't one of the things I'm real good at. I wonder how he's gonna explain showing up in his drawers to his pop.
