From the end of slavery, to the end of the ninetieth century, it was clear to ever American that the emancipation and the reconstruction had not resolved the racial situation in the United States. In the early eighteenth century; Booker Taliaferro Washington (Booker T. Washington ) along with other powerful lenders, lead the way to helping the United States with the issue of racism which was so deeply embedded in the United States. Booker T. His father, a local white man, is decremented as to not taking any responsibility for Booker T. Washington as a child. His mother married another slave; the slave his mother married, escaped to West Virginia during the civil war. Booker T. Washington His mother and stepfather along with his two brothers were liberated by the Union army in 1865.
Booker T. Washington’s stepfather was a hard worker that believed that his three sons should work just as hard as he does, in the salt mines in Malden, West Virginia, in order to become something in life. Booker T. Washington eagerly asked for education, but his stepfather only conceded when Booker T. Washington agreed to toil the mines every morning and evenings to make up for earnings lost while in school. Because of learning hard work from his stepfather and his love for education, Booker T. longed for a college education. However, before he could attend college, Booker T. had to work ode jobs and as well as becoming, the houseboy for the owner of the coal mine and salt works, he developed scrupulous work habits that would later help him become a powerful leader.
In 1870, he set out for a new American institution called Hampton Institute. The journey into Hampton was not easy for Booker T. Washington to get into, several times Booker T. was tested by the school officials by making him clean rooms without pay, and after these embarrassing acts he was admitted and was given unpaid work as a janitor whale attending school at Hampton. Whale at Hampton he fell under the influence of Samuel Chapmen Armstrong’s, vision of self-help and industrial education. Washington studied brick masonry along with collegiate courses. He graduated in 1876, and he became the first African American educator by earning a teaching job in a rural school for two years. Yet whale teaching he studied at Wayland Seminary in Washington D.C., it was there he became disenchanted with classical education, considering his fellow students to be dandies more interested in making an impression and living off the African American masses than in serving mankind. He became convinced that practical, manual training in rural skills and crafts would save his race, and not higher learning divorced from the reality of the “black man’s downtrodden existence”. By 1879 he was invited back to teach at Hampton Institute, particularly to supervise the 100 Native Americans admitted experimentally.
He proved a great success in his years on the faculty; however his success at Hampton gave a great outlook of the south after the civil war, showing that the south had open its minds to letting African Americans earn education. This did not hide the uprising of the race relation in the deep south between blacks and whites after the emancipation was put into place, this uprising lead to the start of the early civil rights movement; which Booker T. Washington lead ,and made the movement come alive.
