The development of a country depends generally on the work and values of its society. The image of a country can be severely damaged by certain actions and behavior of their citizens, like bribery. When a country is known as a corrupt nation, not only will the facade of the country be affected, but also the economy. Establishing measures to eradicate corruption are urgently necessary. Corruption has been around since the begging of time, but currently is more common in business, more specifically, international business. Transparency international is an organization based solely to battle corruption in businesses, governments and societies. They provide a report annually called “Corruption Perceptions Index”, which is based on the opinion of economic experts and surveys. This makes it very susceptible to criticism, and countries like Venezuela and North Korea refuse to accept the results. Transparency international is also responsible for the “Global Corruption Barometer” which is survey for the public. The organization surveyed a total of one thousand people in each of the one hundred and seven countries that participated. Each contributor spoke about their experiences with corruption in their counties. Since the introduction of this new research there have been many contradictions. Alex Cobham mentions a particular problem that involves the results of Brazil in an article he wrote for the Foreign Policy magazine. In this article, Cobham compares the results provided by the corruption perceptions index and the global corruption barometer. He mentions that Brazil was ranked 69th according to the Corruption Perceptions Index, but the results of the Global Corruption Barometer showed that only four percent of the participants in the survey said that they had bribed before. This makes us wonder which of these statistics is more reliable, or if they can be considered factual at all.
