Bridge Of Spies Hist 1402 Movie Review

769 words - 4 pages

Bridge of Spies is a movie that describes the U-2 incident of 1960 during the Cold War. Directed by Steven Spielberg, the film documents the story of James B. Donovan, a lawyer who was given the duty to negotiate a hostage exchange situation involving an American pilot, Francis Gary Powers. Powers’ spy plane got shot after being discovered carrying out espionage on the Soviet Union. He was to be swapped with Rudolf Abel, a Soviet spying for the KGB, who was incarcerated by the U.S. authorities. In the meantime, Donovan, being one of the best lawyers of that time, was supposed to provide Abel with legal representation to show the world that America did not discriminate against anyone regardless of the crimes they had committed. The film stars Tom Hanks playing James B. Donovan and Mark Rylance as Rudolf Abel. For his role as Rudolf Abel, Rylance received an Oscar for the best performance by an actor in a supporting role. Despite the fact that this movie was released in 16 October, 2016, the events depicted are those of the Cold War in 1960 that involved a series of espionage between the United States and the Soviet Union. The film attracted positive reviews from critics worldwide as everyone seemed to appreciate the work of Spielberg both in entertaining and educating people of such a historical event.
Accuracy of the movie’s plot is proved by the fact that this historical event was documented as one of the aspects of the Cold War. In addition, the characteristics of Donovan are acknowledged, and he also penned his interpretation titled Strangers on a Bridge: The Case of Colonel Abel and Francis Gary Powers. Furthermore, the place where the historical hostage exchange took place is known as the Glienicke Bridge, a place that excites even today. It connects Potsdam with Berlin. I believe that the movie is well-thought as it attempts to cover all aspects of the events that took place during the build-up to the hostage exchange as well as all the political negotiations that took place under the mediation of lawyer Donovan.
Watching the movie greatly impacted my reading of historical documents that describe the Cold War. For instance, I was not aware of the politics involved in negotiation for the two spies because many documents describing the Cold War usually...
