Short Story Essay

¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬Up in the remarkable world of Alvomane which resembles heaven, there lives the Lionncia family. They have three sons, Lachlan, Lucius and Luke. The two elder sons are typically dutiful and respectful to their parents, whereas Luke is the youngest son who does everything to disobey except to impress the King and Queen. Unlike his brothers, Luke is always the disappointing one in his parents’ eyes. One day, a rather young teenager named Logan comes joining this realm after he died in a car accident. Desperately, he asks the family to help his sister who is still in the Intensive Care Unit after the car accident. However, Logan and Naomi are non-blood related siblings but they have been relying on each other in their lives as they are both orphans. In this situation, Naomi really needs someone beside her.

At this time, King Aroetlan is already thinking of sending Luke to help Naomi as he wants this young man to do something meaningful or to help someone in his life. Nonetheless, Queen Isadercia suggests to the King that he should dispossess all his belongings and possessions if he still refuses to assist Logan. Luke as the typical spoilt son gets scared and does not want his valuables to be taken back.

Logan meets with Luke in a private meeting room – he briefs Luke everything about himself, Naomi and the situation down on Earth. Leaving to Earth, Luke tries to figure out a way to enter Naomi’s hospital room without having to trespass. At the hospital’s reception desk, Luke explains to the nurses and doctors that he is Logan’s separated brother while he needs to use Logan’s identity till Naomi wakes up. Despite the fact that Naomi is in the state of half-unconsciousness, Luke takes care of her in the way that a brother would treat his own sister. Tidying up the room, dampening her dry lips and talking alongside her, Luke gradually realises that he actually holds a huge responsibility while also finding how important a live is.

A fortnight later, Naomi unexpectedly encounters a heart problem and she has to undergo a critical surgery that carries a high risk of death. Now in this situation, Luke is the only one eligible to decide whether or not for her to go for the surgery. All of a sudden, Luke feels that he has this strong feeling as a sibling-kind of affection comes between him and Naomi. Lastly, Luke signs the contract without Logan’s consideration or opinion because he knows exactly in his heart what he should do.

As the doctors perform the surgery in the operation theatre, Luke stays outside while he patiently waits for Naomi. In his entire life, this is the first time Luke has ever felt the emotions of fear and worry in his heart. As the sound of the clock ticking loudly in the background, Luke’s heart beats faster and louder with the nervous yet still atmosphere surrounding him....
