Bronfenbrenner's Ecological System Theory Paper

Bronfenner’s ecological systems theory identifies five environmental systems with which child interacts. The model consist of five major systems; microsystem, mesosystem, exosystem, macrosystem, and chronosystem. Bronfenbrenner believed that each system joins with each other to affect a child’s development.
The first level is the microsystem, which is made up of the child’s daily activities, and the people with whom the child interacts with on a regular basis. This core environment is how the child initially learns about the world. 76). A child with a depressed parent may result with the child having behavior problems due to neglected parenting which in turn could be responsible for problematic peer relationships. An example of the mesosystem helping a depressed parent and child would be a friend/teacher listening and trying to relieve concerns which will hopefully enhance the parent’s self esteem and lessen depression. A parent in a healthier mind spot is more than likely to be more sensitive and involved manner with their child. Bronfenbrenner describes the exosystem as being, ‘made up of social settings that do not contain the children but nevertheless affect experiences in their immediate settings’ (Berk, 2012, p.27). The exosystem is the outer shell surrounding both the mesosystem and the microsystem. Examples of social settings that the child may not be part of include social networks of a child’s parents and members of the extended family, which all have an impact on the child’s development process. For example, a depressed parent might isolate socially and have few community-based or personal ties that could lead to higher rates of child abuse and conflict, which are detrimental to a child’s development.
