In the Community
Brookshire Grocery Company hosts and participates in a wide variety of community service programs with an average of 800 per year (Reynolds, E., Champagne, R. & Robinson, I., January/February 2003, pg. 32). During the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays, customers have the opportunity to donate food to benefit a food drive for families in need (E. Platt, personal communication, March 22, 2014). After the food is donated and gathered, employees fill paper sacks to distribute to the families (E. Platt, personal communication, March 22, 2014). Employees also voluntarily ban together on their own to improve communities and help those in need in various ways (Reynolds et al., ...view middle of the document...

One of the unique benefits of Brookshire’s employees is the park that opened in 1974 (The Brookshire Story, 1976, pg. 23). This recreation area is exclusively for employees, their family, and guests at Lake Palestine near Tyler, Texas (The Brookshire Story, 1976, pg. 23). In addition, the Brookshire benefit package includes, a period of paid vacation and holidays, personal days, medical plans, life and accidental death and dismemberment coverage, prescriptions, dental care, Christmas gift bonuses, profit sharing, partner assistance services, workers compensation, a resource library, Brookshire University, and Brookshire’s scholarship program (Reynolds et al., January/February 2003, pg. 29). Brookshire University offers 47 classes covering a wide range of topics (Reynolds et al., January/February 2003, pg. 29). There are also scholarships available to employees and their children to attend any university (J Reynolds et al., January/February 2003, pg. 29). One of the most prominent opportunities for employees is profit sharing. In the 1930’s, Wood began offering the four managers of his Tyler and Longview, Texas stores profit sharing (The Brookshire Story, 1976, pg. 10). It later expanded to all employees (E. Platt, personal communication, March 22, 2014). Profit sharing is a combination of a 401(k) and Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP) benefits (Reynolds et al., January/February 2003, pg.19).
