Buddhismens historia
Siddharta Gautama föddes i byn Lumbini, antagligen år 560 f.kr. Hans föräldrar härskade över ett litet kungadöme i nordöstra Indien.

En vecka efter hans födelse dog hans mor, drottning Maya, och den lilla prinsen uppfostrades av sin moster, Pajapati. När en vis man förutspådde att barnet antingen skulle bli en stor och mäktig kung eller en berömd helig man, föresatte kung Suddhodana att se till att hans dyre son skulle växa upp till kung. Därför fick Siddharta leva ett liv i fullkomlig lyx och njutning, skyddad från allt fult och sorgligt, och alltid omgiven av vackra människor och föremål. Han kunde definitivt ha blivit bortskämd och högmodig men blev istället en mycket omtänksam man.

Trots att Siddharta hade allt man kunde tänka sig, var han inte nöjd men sin tillvaro. När han blev 29 år gammal bestämde han sig för att rymma från sitt palats för att se den stora vida världen.

Denna handling förändrade hela hans liv. Efter hand kom han att möta en ung man, en gammal man, en död man och till slut en helig man. Dessa män kom att kallas ”de fyra himmelska budbärarna”. Mötet med dem innehar att Siddharta förstod vad han gick miste om utanför palatset: att ålderdom, sjukdom och död drabbar allt levande. När Siddharta mötte den helige mannen visste han att denna man förstod meningen med det egentliga livet. Det kändes antagligen svårt att lämna hela sin familj men Siddharta gjorde detta i stor tysthet. Han klippte håret och bytte till kläder som kringvandrande, hemlösa munkar bar. Denna enormt stora förändring i Siddhartas liv kallas idag ”hans avsägelse”.
