Bullying is unwanted, aggressive behavior among school aged children that involves a real or perceived power imbalance (stopbullying.gov). Bullying is in every type of school now from elementary to college. And it seems as though children are getting meaner and meaner. The victims of bullies seem to be going to more drastic measures to stop the torture. Bullying as of late is quickly becoming one of the most reported acts in school. A fourth grader named Antonio wrote an essay reflecting on his life as a bully and how much he wanted to change. As a teacher I know I couldn’t do it alone so I would devise a plan of action that will produce the most success. My plan will be to first promote a school wide awareness of bullying, make the student body aware that bullying will not be tolerated and work with Antonio to come up with a schedule that will keep him busy and on the right track.
The first plan of action would be to promote awareness throughout the student body. One way that can be done is to have a pep rally, and have a contest where each class will design an anti bullying poster and essay about the effect of bullying. The winning class will have their poster and essay read at the pep rally. This way the students all have to work together, because they will either win or lose as a team. It will be great working as class because all too often children are in classes with their peers and they don’t even know their name. I will also put together a lesson to teach the children about bullying. In the lesson I will cover the following questions: “What is bullying? What is cyber bullying? Why do students bully? Why are students targeted by bullying?”( pacer.org, 2013).The thing with children is that they never think anyone is going to get seriously hurt. They do it because they are mean, insecure, weak minded, or longing to be a part of the in crowd so that they aren’t the ones on the opposite end of the bullying.
The second step in my plan of action is to make sure the student body knows that bullying of any kind will absolutely never be tolerated. Children by nature think that they are smarter that adults so they will try every which way to bully their target under the radar. So I will encourage my students to let me know of any bullying going on, and they could do so anonymously. But when I discipline the bully I won’t to it quietly because I want everyone to know that I am serious. I will make an example of the bullies so that if anyone else tries to bully someone they will think twice because they will remember what happened to their peers.
Since Antonio was a bully I will encourage him to seek help so that he can get to the root of the problem. About 20 percent of teens had been made fun of...
