Burj Khalifa was a construction project that has set a new benchmark on the construction industry.
Burj Khalifa is the tallest building in the world that is located in the Dubai. Burj Khalifa tower received a
lot of attention even before its construction, as it was designed to be the tallest building in the world.
Many construction projects were initiated by various people around the world but this project gained
the attention of whole world.
Burj Khalifa is the tallest building in the world with the height of 2722 feet. In 2004, the construction of
the burj began and the exterior was completed in 2009. In 2010, the building was opened for the
general public. The aim of Burj Khalifa was not just to build the tallest building, but it was designed to be
a milestone of ingenuity, inspiration and achievement. Its shape was designed to be look like as a flower
in the desert to show the prosperity of the country. Technically, the tower was built by mixed structure
between reinforced concrete and steel frame. Also, in order to increase safety and security against the
strong winds from the coast, Burj Khalifa was built with a Y-shape plan.
The completion cost of the project was about $1.5 billion which was a huge amount. The massive
construction of the project involved big challenges. Though the building received many awards and
popularity, issues related to the labour, timely completion of the project, raising funds and designing of
the building involved were the major challenges faced. This is why I chose Burj Khalifa as my topic.
Overview of the project
The decision to construct the building was mainly based on government?s decision to develop Dubai as
tourism attraction and diversify from oil-based economy. The building was named in honour of the ruler
of Abu Dhabi and president of the United Arab Emirates, Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan; Abu Dhabi and
the UAE government lent Dubai money to pay its debts.
Adrian Smith, at that point of Skidmore, Owings and Merrill (SOM), whose firm outlined the Willis Tower
and One World Trade Center, planned the Burj Khalifa. Hyder Consulting was been the overseeing
