1460 words - 6 pages

Over just the past decade, mobile phones have developed and advanced very quickly. Not only have they increased in technology, but also the number of people who use them has skyrocketed and the importance of mobile phones has become greater than ever all around the world. However, a growing concern for their possible adverse effects on human health has risen up, which has caused a mass of scientific activity to figure out this dilemma (Erogul et al., 2006, p. 840). A possible health effect of electromagnetic radiation from mobile phones is male infertility. About 15% of couples are struck by infertility, with about half of them resulting from male infertility (Ferguson, 2012, para. 3; Agarwal et al., 2008, p. 124). Infertility is usually a lifelong disability, in a lot of cases it is something that cannot be cured. This is why it is so daunting to people, many break down into depression when they find out they are the reason for not being have children. Many male mobile phone users have no idea the damage caused by mobile radiation and with mobile phones being so centric in most people’s daily lives, it will be causing a great amount of damage. The continuing growth of mobile phone usage and as it becomes more and more essential it becomes in our life, the bigger it will influence the already large infertility rate around the world. Coincidentally, the place that mobile phones are most at rest is in the pocket, which is right next to the groin. This means that the damage done is maximised by being very close to the place where semen is produced and stored. To explore the connection between electromagnetic radiation from mobile phones and sperm quality, this essay will critically evaluate selected literature discussing the causes of electromagnetic radiation from mobile phones to sperm quality. The essay is divided into two sections; first, it will discuss if mobile radiation really affects sperm; second, it will examine if it causes other problems than infertility.

There have been various amounts of studies have shown that there is a definite connection between electromagnetic radiation and sperm quality. According to Baste, Riise and Moen (2008 p. 369) sperm quality has decreased in the past half century. Experiments have been performed on both animals and humans. A study was performed by Ozguner et al. (2004); where twenty adult male Sprague-Dawley were put into two groups of ten animals in random: group one was put free from EMF (electric magnetic field) and group two was exposed to thirty minutes a day of EMF, five days per week, for four weeks to 900 MHz of EMF. When the four weeks had passed, testes tissues were submitted for examination. The group, which had been exposed to EMF, the diameter of the seminiferous tubules and the mean height of germinal epithelium were significantly decreased. There was also a significant decrease in testosterone level along with a decrease in plasma luteinizing hormone and Follicle-stimulating hormone...
