The Capacitor A capacitor is an electronic component, generally consisting of two conducting surfaces, called capacitor plates. These two plates are separated by a non-conductor called dielectric, which can be a vacuum, air, plastic, etc. Capacitors actually have many appearances, but the most commonly used actually looks like a piece of gum with two wires protruding from the bottom. Capacitors are mainly used to store electrical charge and discharge electrons. It holds it for a certain amount of time, which is actually measured by time constants. Even if you take the capacitor out of your circuit it still holds the charge until you touch the two wires together.
