When going to work in a rural area there are many things that need to be considered. One job that a starting social worker may take would be in the area of activism in the community. Community activists are present in many organizations and even work in many rural environments. One good example of a rural area that has community activists is Jay County. In order to transition to a new job in a rural setting it is important to look at all areas of life. Geographic and Physical Environment
The geographic and physical location of Jay county can have a big impact on the residents that differ from urban environments, Some of the issues include: exposure to chemicals, injuries from working on farms and a lack of resources. Rural areas have a higher chance of injury from farm equipment and supplies that are used. “Farm workers are at high risk for fatal and nonfatal injuries, work-related lung diseases, noise-induced hearing loss, skin diseases, and certain cancers associated with chemical use and prolonged sun exposure (United States Department of Labor, 2014)”. While there are many ways that workers in rural settings get injured, one more common reason is tractors. “The leading cause of death for farm workers between 1992 and 2009 was tractor overturns, accounting for over 90 deaths annually. The most effective way to prevent tractor overturn deaths is the use of Roll-Over Protective Structures; however in 2006 only 59% of tractors used on farms in the US were equipped with these devices (United States Department of Labor, 2014)”. Along with the impact from the physical environment, the geographic location also has an impact on residents.
The land where people live can have a huge impact on their lives, and those that live in rural settings may face challenges that those in urban areas. In rural areas, where many miles may lay between the population and services, there may be a lack of service in many aspects of life. One area where the lack of services can be felt is in the medical field. “Many rural communities have difficulties attracting and retaining clinicians because of concerns about isolation, limited health facilities, or a lack of employment and education opportunities for their families (Young, 2004)”. Because of the lack of medical services the physical health of those who live in rural areas may not have access to many in urban areas take advantage of.
Conflict within Local Population
There are many issues that can cause stress within a community. In Jay County there are many that can be a cause of conflict for the residents. Some of the conflict within the population includes: a growing population of minorities, conflict dealing with religion, and people moving to urban areas. Around Jay County there is now a growing rate of diversity and it has caused some issues with members of the population. There is a lack of knowledge about other groups of people that are considered outsiders and much of what is known is based on fact. The lack of correct information can cause discrimination in a community. One big aspect of Jay County is religion, Jay County is in a area known as the bible belt, and is known for being consertive.
