Pulmonary embolism, also known as PE, a “complication of blood clots in the lungs,” which causes “100,000 through 180,000” United States citizens to pass away each year. The Chairman of the Venous Disease Coalition made the statement that, “Every year more people die from preventable blood clots than from breast cancer, AIDS, and traffic accidents combined.” Deep vein thrombosis, also known as DVT, is the “blood clots that occur mainly in the calf and thigh deep veins” are another type of blood clots. However, with blood clots being as preventable as they are except for hereditary blood clots, people need to be aware of the symptoms and when to have the doctors check them out.

Hereditary antithrombin deficiency occurs in “one to two-thousand people” and is caused by “mutations in the SERPINC1 gene.” The hereditary antithrombin deficiency is inherited through an “autosomal dominant pattern.” People with this disorder do not have enough “functional antithrombin” to stop clotting proteins.
Deep vein thrombosis is extremely dangerous for two reasons. The first reason is that if the “blood clot breaks free from the leg veins and travels through the heart and lodges in the lung artery” it will cause a pulmonary embolism, which can cause death. Secondly, “blood clots can permanently damage the veins”, just about “half the survivors experience long-term leg pain, heaviness and swelling” which can make it difficult to walk, the survivors also might see “changes in skin color and open leg sores.” The survivors of DVT have a condition called “post-thrombotic syndrome (PTS) or ‘chronic venous insufficiency’.” This condition can completely change their quality of life.
Two years ago my mom’s friend,Tawnya, died when the deep vein thrombosis blood clot that she had broke free and got stuck on its journey to her lungs. It was a tragic death she left behind three children who were lost. Saturday morning we got the phone call telling us that Tawnya’s son, Bradlee, had passed away from a DVT that had managed to break loose and made its journey to his lungs successfully.
