Many people throughout the world may be living with a disorder that they may not even realize they have. I have never heard of this disorder until a few years ago whenever my father was diagnosed with Celiac disease. Celiac disease is a chronic disease which usually attacks the proximal parts of the small intestine, which is caused by an inadequate immune reaction in contact with gluten in genetically predisposed persons (Osmancevic, 2011, p134). Celiac’s disease is when your body can’t digest any food that contains gluten, which is a protein that is found in wheat plants and used in flour products. There is not a cure for celiac disease but by managing and changing the child’s diet to gluten free foods than it can help alleviate the symptoms and discomfort. When CD is detected at a young age, children are much more willing to cooperate with the changes in their food rather than an adolescent who has eaten one way for so long. I know that my father had a hard time changing his diet ways as an adult, so the sooner the parent changes their child’s diet the easier it will become for their child to adjust. When my father eats food that contains gluten he says, “I have lower severe abdominal pain and my belly feels bloated.” It is a very uncomfortable feeling for him. Celiac patients may suffer severe stomach pain and diarrhea if they eat even traces of the protein gluten, which is found in wheat, rye, barley and in many supermarket foods (Mayo Clinic Staff, 2010). I also have two younger cousins who were diagnosed when they were infants. Whenever my cousins would go out to eat, it was hard to find food at a restaurant gluten-free so my aunt would always have to pack food from home just so they could eat out together.

CD can be diagnosed by taking biopsies from an endoscopy examination and by blood tests. Some recent studies have shown while on a gluten free diet (GFD), children with CD experience a complete catch-up growth in height and weight (Tau, Mautalen, De Rosa, Valenzuala, 2006). CD can cause malabsorption of the intestines which can cause a decrease in the absorption of nutrients such as calcium. After following a GFD, intestinal absorption is restored (Tau, Mautalen, De Rosa, Valenzuala, 2006). The body is able to absorb the calcium once the intestine has been restored which helps increase bone mass density in children. Tau did a study in 2006 that shown after following a gluten-free diet for a year that the average increase in bone mass density went from 0.46 to 0.55. Some foods you may want to avoid that contain gluten would be bread, flour, wheat, crackers, and beer. There are many foods now that are made gluten-free. When going to the store, look for the products that say gluten-free on the package or container.
