Music is a very profitable and complex industry. Music has expanded to a worldwide industry for musical artist to express their art through the form of song to the masses. This resulted in recorded companies selling music through digital distributions due to consumer demands. This drastically diminished the sells of CD’s, vinyl’s, and tapes. An ultimately the industry has seen a steady decline in revenue per year. Online piracy has become a major issue for companies to deal with due to digital music. This problem will continue until a reasonable solution is found.
Another major change that has occurred in the past 20 years is the integration of social networking. Social networking has become a major part of communication in our society. Networks such as Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Tumblr, Instagram, label sites, and etc. all have aided towards music being changed. These sites allow have allowed record companies to reach mass audiences with their product. These social networking sites allow for people to share, like, comment, and rate music that we listen to. This provides feedback to record companies about how music is doing. This new emotional experience of music has revolutionized the industry. Companies have been able to benefit off of social networking also through being able to advertise music on the variety of sites. This allows companies to spread their information on musicians through what other people like on social media. Major record companies and labels have been able to communicate with fans, which is possible through social media. Both musical artists and labels greatly embrace social networking due to the fact it helps them understand their fan based. Labels have built user-friendly sites for their artists. Artists are marketed and allow fans have access to videos, demos, exclusive merchandise, and most importantly each other. Social networking has allowed for fans to be in direct contact with artists and labels. Social media basically has changed every aspect of the music industry.
