Characteristics Of A Hero And Examples Of Characters

627 words - 3 pages

Everyone wants to believe in a hero. Even someone who’s considered a hero has their own image of what a true protector should be. Truth is, there’s no such thing as a universal hero. Perspective changes everything, especially when discussing the characteristics a title must always have. A hero is someone who expects nothing in return, someone who can be normal or extraordinary but looked up to, and who has to sacrifice something to accomplish their goal.
Being a hero means accepting everyone involved in your journey. When you discriminate against someone you lose your ability to understand their actions and their thoughts. In Enders Game, Ender Wiggen had to understand the Formics to know that they didn’t want to fight; rather they were trying to communicate which ultimately ended all conflict with that alien race. Orson Scott, the author of Ender’s Game once said, “Perhaps it's impossible to wear an identity without becoming what you pretend to be.” Being a hero is a lot like wearing an identity because it all depends on how you act, what you wear, and who you impact. Without understanding everyone in your journey, especially the enemy, you can never defeat them because you won’t know their weakness, and without a weakness, the battle never ends.
The majority of society sees a hero as a man or a woman in a flamboyant suit, with a superpower, saving millions of lives alone; however, today’s heroes don’t have anything in common with this stereotype. Modern day heroes are normal people who go out of their way to help one person or a group of people. For example, in Enrique’s Journey by Sonia Nozario, Olga Sánchez Martínez lives her life helping others without any personal gain, or reward. “I made a pact: heal me, and I will help others.” (Enrique’s Journey, 91)....
