When talking about a leader, there is no set of characteristics that can describe one. But there are a couple of characteristics that may work especially well. Vision is one of those characteristics. A strong vision by definition is the core values of a company. It defines purpose, and describes what leaders see for their business in the future. [2] In every aspect, vision brings meaning to work, and helps people become proactive. A good vision identifies direction and purpose; it is well articulated and easily understood, as well as being ambitious. [2]

Transformational leaders set goals and put incentives in place to motivate their employees to performance to the best of their abilities, while providing opportunities for professional growth. [4] Transformational leadership focuses on an employee reward system, and attempts to link such rewards with organizational values. A transformational approach dictates attention to the individual strengths and weaknesses of employees and the enhancement of their performance and interest in organizational outcomes. [5]
An example of a transformational leader is Bill Gates. He is widely known for his co- starting up of Microsoft. He is highly influential and highly powerful; two important traits of a leader. Gates is also a visionary: he envisions a healthier world by donating significant amount of his wealth to empower under developed nations with the capability of being able to positively help others in the future. Bill Gates’ management style is widely known throughout the world. He has the ability to communicate his vision among people who have similar status (Warren Buffet etc.) and he also has the ability to influence others to think like he does; which is an inperative feature in a transformational leader. Gates also does what he does for the good of his cause whether it is for the Bill and Melinda Gates foundation or for Microsoft.
Transactional leadership on the other hand is more concerned with maintaining things as they should be. It is only concerned with keeping things in order and not looking outside of the box. This is the complete opposite of transformational leadership. It is also said that transactional leaders have a week vision in terms of taking their corporation above and beyond standards; they are only looking for incremental change and seek stability. A transactional leader does not look ahead to lead in the market; they are only concerned with making sure everything flows effortlessly today.
