Have you ever questioned if football is a real sport? Most people will say yes of course football is a sport, but who is the one to say it’s a sport or not? How would you feel if put your heart and soul into a sport and some political official that has never played or perpetrated say it’s not.
Well, this happened to a group in Connecticut, the school in Quinnipiac was told that competitive cheerleading was not an official sport, but what is a definition of the word sport? A sport is, an athletic activity requiring skill or physical prowess and often of a competitive nature. Some people could say yes, cheerleading is a sport and some say it’s not.
Does anyone really know how cheerleading started? Cheerleading in the United States started in 1898. People started pep clubs and would go to the games and get the players and the fans excited about the game. The first college that had a pep club was University Of Minnesota. At this time it was an all men group, and would be for the next twenty-five years, but as time went on in 1923 the University of Minnesota would introduce the first female cheerleader.
Later in the 1940 most men would no longer be cheerleader. All the men would be off to fight for their country, in World War II. When time went on the woman would have enhance their techniques and skills to improve. In 1948 the United States would have their first cheerleading camp, to also improve the girls’ skills. In 1982 Universal Cheerleading Association would host the first National Cheerleading Championships that was held on ESPN. In 1996 Cheerleaders participated in the opening ceremonies for the XXVI Summer Olympiads, which was held in Atlanta Georgia. That would also introduce the world to more cheerleading.
There has been many famous people who has been cheerleaders. Some that people would never think would be a cheerleader. The bubbly and great personality Cameron Diaz along with Hale Barry and Sandra Bullock. But the few people would never would have expected would be Samuel L. Jackson, Ronald Regan and George W. Bush,
