It happens every day in high school classrooms that male athletes argue with female athletes that cheerleading isn’t a sport. Every cheerleader gets upset when someone tries to argue with them that cheerleading is not a sport.Cheerleading should be a sport because we compete; work just as hard as other athletes;we have rules. Cheerleading should be considered a sport because it meets all the requirements. The Women's Sports Foundation has narrowed it down to what should be a considered a sport. To be a sport it must be a physical activity which involves propelling a mass through space. Cheerleaders stunt which involves throwing another cheerleader into the air.
The Women's Foundation also stated that to be considered a sport it needs to be governed by rules that explicitly define time,space and purpose of the contest. Cheerleaders go to competitions and they also go to camp in which they compete against different teams to get trophies. Today to be a cheerleader you need to have the strength of a football player, and the grace of a dancer.Cheerleaders need to also have stamina and balance. Cheerleading is also very dangerous. In 2007 26,786 people went to the hospital due to injuries from cheerleading. A recent study shows that cheerleading accounts for 66 percent of catastrophic injuries.
Cheerleading is not easy. Cheerleaders practice up to 12 hours a week that is more than most athletes! When cheerleaders hear people talking about how cheerleading shouldn’t be considered a sport they get very upset. Try lifting another girl above your head keeping them steady while they twist their body in pretzel forms and smile at the same time. Cheerleaders practice nonstop. During stunting cheerleaders get hit, slapped, kicked, elbowed, kneed and then they have to shake it off because they still have to finish the rest of the routine.
Cheerleaders are often seen on the sidelines at football and basketball games. The people in the stands might not know how hard these cheerleaders really work. They go through rigorous training. Cheerleaders also spend hours each day perfecting the routines they have learned so it looks perfect when it is time to perform out on the field or court. You would never see a cheerleader just sitting in front of the TV you would see her on the floor stretching to better herself. Cheerleaders are constantly stretching.
